Why PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Got Me Into Video Games Again

I am a big fan of video games. They allow you to interact and immerse yourself in new worlds like no other media can. But over the last few months, something changed. As many games as I tried to play, the sense of excitement didn’t seem to be there. I still liked playing, but I felt like I’d rather watch a movie or do something else. But then I found PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, an online battle royale survival game where 100 players land on an island and must fight to the last man standing. And to my surprise, my enthusiasm of playing video games was back. Here is why PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds got me back into video games.

It’s Unpredictable

Probably the most frustrating and most fun part of Battlegrounds is that you never know what’s going to happen. Other players could be anywhere at any time, whether they are waiting for you or are completely unsuspecting. There are also many ways to play. Do you head for popular areas and face other players head on? Do you go near the center of the white circle and hide? In the many hours I’ve poured into this game, no two matches have been the same.

It’s Tactical

Battlegrounds isn’t just a game where players are shooting at each other all the time (though that can be fun too), there are many factors you have to account for. It’s a game of strategy as much as it is action. Being stealthy and avoiding open areas are vital to get into the endgame. having strong armor and health boosts also give you an advantage. Although there are cases where no matter what you do, some jerk will be able to easily kill you.

It’s a Great Concept with Good Execution

I’ve been waiting for a good Hunger Games style death match game for a while. And while it has been attempted before, it just hasn’t worked. Battlegrounds however, has done a great job at giving the idea the intensity and fun it should have. Of course, it should be noted that it hasn’t lived up to its full potential. The graphics are so-so, there are a lot of glitches, and the shooting system needs improvement. But considering it was made by an indie developer and it’s still in pre-alpha, I’d say it’s a success.

Overall, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds may not be truly great like games such as the Uncharted franchise, but it has delivered the most fun I’ve had with a game in a while. Are you one of the over 2 million people who has played Battlegrounds? if so, do you agree that it’s a lot of fun (despite being infuriatingly difficult from time to time)?
